The first forms of literature were transmitted orally. A popular form of oral poetry was the ballad. It developed during the Middle Ages. Traditional ballads were anonymous and they were a combination of verse, song and dance.
One of the most famous English medieval ballads is “Geordie”. There are different versions of this poem as it changed while passing from person to person and from country to country. In the English version the ballad was inspired by the story of a man who was executed for stealing horses and cattle while the Scottish version tells the story of a nobleman who was sentenced to death for political reasons. The version of Geordie we read is about a nobleman, he stole sixteen of the king’s royal deers and sold them. He was caught hunting and for this reason he will be hanged with a golden chain. The story is told by a third person narrator and from the point of view of a young lady, a “fair pretty maid”, who was so in love with Geordie that she reached the London court to try saving his life. She would give away her children (she has got two kids already and she is pregnant with a third one) if Geordie was released. Unfortunately, the judge told her to go home because he could not pardon Geordie nor save his life.
Il cantautore genovese Fabrizio De Andrè realizzò una versione italiana della ballata: nel 1966 lanciò una delle sue più famose canzoni, intitolata appunto “Geordie”. Certamente tutti conosciamo il testo e ne ricordiamo il ritmo, ereditato dalla struttura medievale della ballata inglese che si compone di ritornelli con allitterazioni e rime che le conferiscono una certa orecchiabilità.
Confrontando la versione originale del testo in inglese con il testo di De Andrè, notiamo che entrambe contano sette stanze formate da quattro versi. Nella versione inglese Geordie aveva cacciato sedici cervi nel parco del re, mentre in quella italiana solo sei: differenza dovuta alla metrica. Nella canzone italiana il giudice, a cui la moglie/amante di Geordie chiede aiuto, nella versione inglese non è tra i personaggi citati; inoltre non è riportato che la “pretty maid” è in dolce attesa e che per salvarlo rinuncerebbe addirittura ai suoi figli.
Maybe the English version wanted to point out the love between Geordie and the lady? Questo non lo sappiamo, ma sono sicura che tutti vorremmo un qualcuno che venisse a salvarci con la stessa tenacia della “pretty maid”…
